Pelvic inflammatory disease (PID) is an infection of the female reproductive organs. It most often occurs when sexually transmitted bacteria spread from your vagina to your uterus, fallopian tubes or ovaries.

Who is at risk for Pelvic inflammatory disease (PID)?

Young, sexually active women with multiple sex partners are at greatest risk for pelvic inflammatory disease.

What are the symptoms of Pelvic inflammatory disease (PID)?

Pelvic inflammatory disease may not produce any symptoms or signs (referred to as being asymptomatic).
Symptoms of Pelvic inflammatory disease (PID) may include:
  • fever
  • abdominal or pelvic pain
  • vaginal discharge
  • painful urination
  • painful sexual intercourse
  • Irregular periods

How are Pelvic inflammatory disease (PID) diagnosed?

For a proper diagnosis, you’ll need to see a gynecologist to get a pelvic exam. This exam is used to check the condition, size, and shape of your uterus.

How are Pelvic inflammatory disease (PID) treated?

The infection is mainly treated medically. But laparoscopy sometimes required in serious case. Your doctor will decide your treatments.
